Description
A soothing and aromatic Thyme Tea recipe combining dried or fresh thyme with fragrant herbs and spices like jasmine tea, cardamom, fennel seeds, mint, and rosemary. This herbal infusion is ideal for a calming tea experience, served hot with optional lemon slices or as a refreshing iced tea.
Ingredients
Tea Base
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme OR 1/2 cup fresh thyme sprigs (loosely packed, still on the stem)
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon jasmine tea, loose leaf (or 1 tea bag)
Sweetener
- 1 teaspoon sugar or honey (optional), use more or less to taste
Herbs and Spices
- 6 cardamom pods, crushed
- 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
- ~10 mint leaves or 1 teaspoon dried mint
- 2 sprigs fresh rosemary or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
Garnish
- 2 lemon slices (optional), to serve
Instructions
- Prepare Herbs: If using fresh herbs, rinse them thoroughly under cold water and set aside to dry completely to prevent dilution of the tea flavor.
- Boil Water: Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil using a kettle or saucepan. Immediately pour the boiling water into a teapot, two mugs, or a French Press.
- Release Herb Oils: Gently crush the fresh herbs with your hands to help release their essential oils and enhance the tea’s aroma and flavor.
- Add Herbs and Tea: For tea strainers or tea balls, place the thyme, jasmine tea, cardamom pods, fennel seeds, mint leaves, and rosemary inside and immerse it into the boiling water. For a French Press, add these ingredients directly into the water.
- Steep the Tea: Cover the pot, mugs, or French Press lid to retain heat. Steep the mixture for 5-7 minutes if using jasmine tea or 8-10 minutes if making an herbal tea without jasmine tea for optimal flavor extraction.
- Serve: Remove the tea strainer or press down the plunger if using a French Press. Pour the tea into cups and add sweetener (sugar or honey) to taste. Garnish each serving with lemon slices if desired.
- For Iced Tea: To enjoy iced thyme tea, make a larger batch by multiplying ingredients accordingly. Allow the brewed tea to cool slightly before transferring it into a pitcher or glass jar. Chill in the refrigerator and consume within 2-3 days for the freshest taste.
Notes
- Using fresh herbs brings a brighter and more vibrant flavor; dried herbs are a convenient alternative.
- Adjust the amount of sweetener based on your preference or omit entirely for a natural herbal tea.
- Crushing whole spices like cardamom pods enhances their flavor infusion into the tea.
- Steeping time can affect flavor strength; experiment with timing to suit your taste.
- Store leftover brewed tea in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
