Tempeh Mixture
- 1 8 oz package Garden Veggie Lightlife tempeh
- ½ Tablespoon olive oil
- ½ cup chopped yellow onion
- ¼ cup grated carrots
- 2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 2 Tablespoons oat flour
- 1 Tablespoon ground flaxseed
- 1 Tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon tamari
- 1 Tablespoon coconut sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
Cooking & Serving
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Buns and toppings of your choice (e.g., spicy mustard, onions, lettuce, ketchup)
Instructions
- Steam the Tempeh: Cut the block of tempeh into 4-6 pieces and place them in a pot with a steamer basket and water. Steam for 7-10 minutes until tender, then remove and let cool.
- Sauté the Vegetables: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add ½ Tablespoon olive oil. Once warm, add the chopped yellow onion and grated carrots. Cook for 5-7 minutes until onions are soft and translucent. Let the mixture cool.
- Combine Ingredients: In a food processor, add the cooled onion and carrot mixture along with the steamed tempeh, nutritional yeast, oat flour, ground flaxseed, balsamic vinegar, tamari, coconut sugar, garlic powder, chili powder, and paprika.
- Process Mixture: Pulse the ingredients until chopped and combined, ensuring the mixture retains some texture and is not overly processed.
- Chill the Mixture: Transfer the tempeh mixture to a large bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours to firm up.
- Form Patties and Grill: After chilling, shape the mixture into 2-3 patties. Preheat the grill to medium heat, spray the grill grate with nonstick cooking spray, and cook the patties for about 6-7 minutes total, turning once until browned on both sides.
- Assemble and Serve: Place the grilled patties on buns and add your preferred toppings and condiments such as spicy mustard, onions, lettuce, and ketchup. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes

- Use gluten-free buns or leafy greens for a gluten-free option.
- The burgers can also be cooked in a skillet if a grill is not available.
- Leftover patties can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
