Description
Sugared cranberries are a simple and festive treat made by coating fresh cranberries in a light sugar syrup and then rolling them in granulated sugar. These sparkling berries add a delightful tartness and a beautiful frosted appearance, perfect for holiday garnishes, cocktails, or snacking.
Ingredients
Syrup Ingredients
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
Other Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh cranberries, rinsed and dried
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
Instructions
- Prepare the sugar syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer on low for 3 minutes to create a simple syrup.
- Coat the cranberries: Stir in the fresh cranberries until they are fully covered in the syrup. Remove the saucepan from heat and continue stirring the cranberries for 1 minute to ensure even coating.
- Dry the cranberries: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the syrup-coated cranberries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a metal rack. Allow them to dry and set for 1 hour at room temperature.
- Sugar coat the cranberries: After drying, roll the cranberries in batches through the remaining 1 cup granulated sugar until completely coated. Let them dry briefly before using or storing.
Notes
- Ensure cranberries are thoroughly dried after rinsing to help the sugar syrup adhere better.
- Use parchment paper or a metal cooling rack for drying to prevent sticking.
- Sugared cranberries can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- These make excellent garnishes for holiday drinks and desserts or can be eaten as sweet-tart snacks.
