With fresh blackberries simmered into a sweet syrup and combined with sparkling water, this soda is perfect for a summer treat or anytime you want a light, flavorful drink without artificial ingredients.
Ingredients
Blackberry Simple Syrup
- 6 ounces (about 1¼ cups) blackberries, fresh or frozen
- ¾ cup (6 ounces) white granulated sugar
- ¾ cup (6 ounces) water
For the Soda
- Ice, as needed
- 2-4 tablespoons blackberry simple syrup
- Plain seltzer or club soda, to top
- Lemon, lime, mint, or frozen blackberries for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Blackberry Simple Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, and sugar. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it simmers, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved and the blackberries soften, about 5-7 minutes.
- Mash the Blackberries: Once the sugar has dissolved, use a spoon or muddler to mash the blackberries, releasing their juices. Let the syrup continue to simmer for another 5 minutes, then remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
- Strain the Syrup: Strain the cooled syrup through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove blackberry solids and seeds. Pour the syrup into a clean glass jar or bottle and refrigerate. The syrup can keep up to 1 month and yields about 1 cup, enough for 4-8 drinks.
- Assemble the Sparkling Soda: Fill a glass with ice. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of the blackberry simple syrup, depending on your sweetness preference. Top off with plain seltzer or club soda.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish your sparkling blackberry soda with fresh lemon or lime slices, a sprig of mint, or some frozen blackberries for a visually appealing and flavorful finish. Serve immediately and enjoy!
