Description

Skillet Chicken Dumplings is a flavorful and comforting Asian-inspired dish featuring ground chicken cooked with bold spices and vegetables, then simmered with wonton wrappers until tender and dumpling-like. Served over jasmine rice and garnished with fresh avocado and sesame seeds, this recipe offers a quick and delicious weeknight meal ready in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Protein and Aromatics

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 1-3 tablespoons gochujang or chili paste
  • 1-3 tablespoons Thai red curry paste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil

Vegetables and Sauces

  • 1 cup chopped mushrooms
  • 2 cups shredded bok choy or Chinese cabbage
  • 1/2 cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar

Dumplings and Garnishes

  • 1 package wonton wrappers, cut into squares
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • Avocado, for serving
  • Sesame seeds, for serving
  • Jasmine rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cook the meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the ground pork or chicken and cook for about five minutes, breaking it up as it browns, until fully cooked through.
  2. Add spices and aromatics: Stir in the gochujang, Thai red curry paste, chopped ginger, garlic, and sesame oil. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the mixture is fragrant and well combined.
  3. Cook the vegetables: Add the chopped mushrooms and shredded bok choy or Chinese cabbage to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.
  4. Simmer with sauces: Pour in the tamari or soy sauce and rice vinegar. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to reduce the sauce slightly and deepen the flavors.
  5. Add wonton wrappers and water: Stir in 1 cup of water, then add the wonton wrapper squares to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring gently, until the wrappers become tender and dumpling-like in texture.
  6. Finish and garnish: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped green onions. Serve the dumpling mixture spooned over bowls of jasmine rice. Garnish each serving with sliced avocado, sesame seeds, and a drizzle of chili oil if desired.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of gochujang and Thai red curry paste based on your preferred spice level.
  • You can substitute ground chicken with ground pork or turkey as desired.
  • If unable to find tamari, use regular soy sauce but adjust saltiness accordingly.
  • For gluten-free option, confirm that the wonton wrappers and sauces are gluten-free.
  • Leftover skillet dumplings can be refrigerated and gently reheated on the stovetop with a splash of water to prevent drying out.
