Description

This Skillet Tofu BBQ recipe is a quick and flavorful dish perfect for a healthy and satisfying meal. Featuring extra firm tofu seared to perfection in a blend of olive and sesame oils, then tossed in a tangy BBQ and soy sauce mixture with a hint of chili flakes for a spicy kick. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s an ideal plant-based option served best over steamed rice.

Ingredients

Tofu and Oils

  • 14 oz extra firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Sauce and Seasonings

  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili flakes (optional)
  • Sea salt (if needed, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu thoroughly and pat it dry with a clean towel to remove excess moisture, which helps in achieving a crispy texture while cooking.
  2. Cut the Tofu: Slice the tofu into large cubes or strips as preferred to ensure even cooking and easy handling in the skillet.
  3. Cook the Tofu: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add both olive and sesame oils. Place the tofu pieces in the skillet and cook each side until golden brown and crispy, typically about 3-4 minutes per side.
  4. Add Sauces and Seasonings: Once the tofu is browned, lower the heat to medium-low and add the BBQ sauce and light soy sauce. Stir gently to coat the tofu evenly and cook for an additional 1 minute to allow flavors to meld. Sprinkle chili flakes according to your spice preference. Taste and add sea salt if necessary.
  5. Serve Immediately: Remove from heat and serve the BBQ tofu hot, ideally accompanied by steamed rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Press tofu before cooking if possible to remove extra water and improve texture.
  • You can adjust the amount of chili flakes based on your spice tolerance.
  • Use a non-stick skillet to prevent the tofu from sticking and breaking apart.
  • If you prefer a smokier flavor, consider using smoked BBQ sauce.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for added nutrition.
