Description

A refreshing and creamy homemade Mint Chocolate Ice Cream recipe that combines the cool flavor of peppermint extract with chunks of semi-sweet chocolate. This easy-to-make ice cream is perfect for mint lovers craving a rich and indulgent frozen treat.

Ingredients

Ice Cream Base

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups heavy cream (well chilled)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons peppermint extract (or to taste)
  • Droops green food coloring (optional)

Add-ins and Garnish

  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate bar (chopped into tiny pieces)
  • Fresh mint (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Mix Sugar and Cream: In a mixing bowl, whisk the granulated sugar and well-chilled heavy cream thoroughly until the sugar fully dissolves, ensuring a smooth and sweet base for the ice cream.
  2. Add Flavor and Color: Stir in the peppermint extract for that characteristic minty taste. Add a few drops of green food coloring if desired to enhance the visual appeal, mixing until evenly combined.
  3. Churn the Ice Cream: Turn on your ice cream maker and pour the mixture into the machine. Churn for about 25 minutes until the ice cream develops a soft-serve consistency. Gradually add the chopped semi-sweet chocolate pieces during the last 5 minutes of churning to evenly distribute the chocolate bits.
  4. Freeze Until Firm: Transfer the churned ice cream into an airtight container, optionally sprinkling extra chocolate pieces on top. Freeze the container for 2 to 3 hours to allow the ice cream to firm up to a scoopable texture.
  5. Serve: Scoop the mint chocolate ice cream into bowls or cones and garnish with a fresh sprig of mint for an elegant and refreshing presentation.

Notes

  • If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can pour the mixture into a shallow pan and freeze it, stirring every 30 minutes to break up ice crystals until smooth and firm.
  • Adjust the peppermint extract to your taste preference; start with 1 teaspoon if you prefer milder mint flavor.
  • Using high-quality semi-sweet chocolate will greatly enhance the flavor and texture of the ice cream.
  • For a vegan alternative, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and use dairy-free chocolate.
