Description

This classic Irish Coffee recipe combines hot brewed coffee with Irish whiskey and sugar, topped with softly whipped cream and a garnish of chocolate shavings. Perfect for warming up on a chilly evening or as a cozy after-dinner drink.

Ingredients

For the Coffee

  • 2 cups hot water (for warming mugs)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or maple syrup (1 tablespoon per serving)
  • 2 cups brewed coffee
  • 2 oz Irish whiskey

For the Cream Topping

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for whipping cream)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Beat the cream: In a chilled mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream and optional teaspoon of sugar. Whisk until soft peaks form—smooth and fluffy but still soft. Set aside in the fridge to keep cold.
  2. Warm the mugs: Fill two glass coffee mugs with hot water and let them sit for 2-3 minutes to warm up. Then pour out the water; this helps the coffee stay hot longer when served.
  3. Add sweetener: Add 1 tablespoon of sugar or maple syrup into each warmed mug.
  4. Mix coffee and whiskey: Pour freshly brewed hot coffee into each mug over the sweetener. Stir well to dissolve the sugar completely. Then add 1 oz of Irish whiskey to each mug and stir gently to combine all flavors.
  5. Serve with cream: Carefully float the softly whipped cream on top of the coffee mixture by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Garnish with chocolate shavings for an extra touch of indulgence and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use freshly brewed strong coffee for the best flavor.
  • Chilling the mixing bowl before whipping the cream helps achieve soft peaks more easily.
  • Floating the cream gently on top preserves the classic layered look of Irish Coffee.
  • You can substitute maple syrup for sugar for a richer sweetness.
  • Chocolate shavings add an elegant garnish but can be omitted if unavailable.
