Description

Honeycomb Bread is a delightful, soft pull-apart bread filled with creamy cubes of cream cheese, baked in a honeycomb pattern and glazed with a fragrant honey and cardamom syrup. This sweet bread combines the richness of cream cheese with the subtle floral notes of orange blossom and cardamom, making it a perfect treat for breakfast, brunch, or a comforting snack.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 ½ Cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ Teaspoons instant yeast
  • ¼ Cup sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • ¾ Cup milk (warm)
  • ¼ Cup water (warm)
  • ¼ Cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Filling

  • 1 Cup cream cheese (cut into cubes)

Glaze

  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • ¾ Cup white sugar
  • ¾ Cup water
  • 4 cardamom pods (crushed)
  • 2 Teaspoons orange blossom water
  • Sesame seeds (for sprinkling, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, mix warm milk, warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in the melted butter, beaten egg, and salt into the yeast mixture, combining thoroughly.
  3. Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough: Knead the dough by hand or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide it into 12 to 16 equal portions.
  7. Fill the Rolls: Flatten each dough piece, place a cube of cream cheese in the center, and carefully seal the dough around it into a ball.
  8. Assemble the Honeycomb: Grease a large ovenproof skillet or cake pan. Arrange the filled dough balls close together in the pan, forming a honeycomb pattern.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the arranged dough balls and let them rise again for 30 to 40 minutes until puffed up.
  10. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking.
  11. Bake the Bread: Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
  12. Prepare the Glaze: Meanwhile, combine honey, white sugar, water, crushed cardamom pods, and orange blossom water in a small pan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  13. Glaze the Bread: Remove the baked bread from the oven and while still warm, brush the honey glaze evenly over the rolls. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  14. Cool Before Serving: Allow the bread to cool slightly before serving to let the glaze set and flavors meld.

Notes

  • Use warm ingredients to help activate the yeast properly.
  • Ensure the cream cheese cubes are cold or chilled so they hold their shape inside the dough during baking.
  • The honey glaze can be adjusted by adding more or less sugar depending on your preferred sweetness.
  • Sesame seeds are optional but add a nice texture and flavor contrast.
  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
