Description

A simple and savory Salisbury steak recipe baked in the oven with tender red potatoes and caramelized onions. This easy 40-minute dish is perfect for a comforting weeknight meal with minimal prep and cleanup.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 small yellow or white onion
  • 6-7 small red potatoes, golf ball sized
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus extra for seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus extra for seasoning
  • 8 ounces 80/20 ground beef (20% fat)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a rimmed sheet pan with nonstick foil to make cleanup easier and prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Onions: Peel the onion and slice it into thin half-moon shapes by first cutting it from root to tip, then laying it flat and slicing horizontally thinly. Spread the sliced onions evenly on the bottom of the prepared sheet pan.
  3. Prepare Potatoes: Dice each red potato into about 6 pieces. Add the diced potatoes to the sheet pan on top of the onions. Drizzle with canola oil and season with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss to evenly coat the potatoes and onions.
  4. Make Salisbury Steak Patties: In a small bowl, combine ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard powder, onion powder, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix gently by hand until ingredients are evenly incorporated, careful not to overmix. Shape the mixture into two oblong patties roughly the size of your palm.
  5. Bake: Place the patties on top of the potatoes and onions in the sheet pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the potatoes are tender.
  6. Serve: Remove from oven and serve immediately while hot, enjoying the flavorful Salisbury steak paired with roasted potatoes and caramelized onions.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness in the patties.
  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender instead of tough.
  • Cut potatoes uniformly so they cook evenly alongside the patties.
  • If preferred, use yellow or red onions based on your taste preference for a sweeter or sharper onion flavor.
  • The Worcestershire sauce adds depth to the Salisbury steak but can be omitted for a milder taste.
