Description

A quick and delicious homemade blueberry oatmeal made with rolled oats, fresh or frozen blueberries, and warm spices. This recipe is perfect for a comforting breakfast that comes together in just 12 minutes.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon salted butter or coconut oil
  • 1 cup Old Fashioned rolled oats (do not use instant oats or steel cut oats)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (2% or oat milk)
  • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen*
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings

  • Maple syrup
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Sliced almonds
  • Milk

Instructions

  1. Toast the oats: Melt the butter or coconut oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the oats and toast them for about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until they become fragrant. This toasting step enhances the nutty flavor of the oats.
  2. Cook the oatmeal: Reduce the heat to low and carefully pour in the water, milk, blueberries, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir everything together, then bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the oats have thickened and softened, mashing the blueberries with the back of a large spoon as you stir to release their purple color and flavor.
  3. Serve and garnish: Remove the saucepan from the heat once the oatmeal reaches your desired consistency. Serve it warm topped with your choice of maple syrup, fresh blueberries, sliced almonds, and a splash of milk for extra creaminess.

Notes

  • Use Old Fashioned rolled oats for the best texture; avoid instant or steel cut oats.
  • Frozen blueberries can be used directly from the freezer without thawing.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the brown sugar and maple syrup toppings.
  • For a vegan option, use coconut oil and plant-based milk such as oat milk.
  • To add extra protein, consider stirring in a spoonful of nut butter or a sprinkle of chia seeds after cooking.
