Ingredients
For the Danish:
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (from a 17.3 oz package)
- 4 oz (1/2 block) cream cheese, softened
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips or chocolate chunks
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon water
For the Icing (Optional):
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Garnish:
- Extra chocolate chips or powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unfold the thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking.
- Make Filling: In a bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy without lumps.
- Assemble: Cut the puff pastry sheet into three equal rectangles. Spoon a generous amount of the cream cheese filling down the center of each piece, then sprinkle evenly with mini chocolate chips. Fold the edges of the puff pastry slightly over the filling to enclose it, pressing gently to seal if necessary. Place the assembled danishes on the prepared baking sheet.
- Egg Wash: Whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the tops of the danishes to achieve a glossy, golden-brown finish during baking.
- Bake: Bake the danishes in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are puffed up with crisp, deep golden edges. Remove from the oven and let them cool briefly on the pan.
- Prepare Icing: While the danishes cool slightly, stir together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and drizzleable. Drizzle the icing over the warm pastries to add a sweet finishing touch.
- Serve: Serve the danishes slightly warm to enjoy the melty chocolate and creamy filling at their best.
Notes
- Properly thaw puff pastry for 30–40 minutes at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator to ensure best puff and texture.
- Keep the dough cool while handling and use a sharp knife for clean cuts to prevent tearing.
- Avoid overfilling the pastries to prevent leaking during baking.
- Variations include swapping mini chocolate chips for Nutella, chocolate spread, or different types of chocolate; adding a spoonful of peanut or almond butter; sprinkling chopped nuts; or adding espresso powder for an intensified chocolate flavor.
- Serve dusted with powdered sugar, extra chocolate drizzles, and paired with berries, coffee, or tea for an elegant presentation.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 5–7 minutes to restore crispness—avoid microwaving to keep flaky texture.
- Unbaked assembled danishes can be frozen without the egg wash and baked directly from frozen, adding 3-5 minutes to baking time.
- Common mistakes include warming dough too much (leading to poor puff), overfilling (causing leaks), skipping egg wash (resulting in a dull finish), underbaking (doughy bottoms), and using cold cream cheese (creating a lumpy filling).
