Description
Crispy and flavorful fried oyster mushrooms coated in a seasoned batter and deep-fried to golden perfection. This simple vegan recipe makes a delicious appetizer or snack, featuring a crunchy exterior and tender, juicy mushrooms inside.
Ingredients
Mushrooms
- 2 cups oyster mushrooms
Batter & Coating
- 1/2 cup non-dairy milk (plant-based milk)
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Salt (to taste)
For Frying
- 1 cup vegetable oil (for deep frying)
Instructions
- Clean and salt the mushrooms: Wipe the oyster mushrooms gently with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt. Lay them on a paper towel and sprinkle salt evenly on both sides. Let them sit for 30 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- Prepare the seasoned flour mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, paprika, oregano, and garlic powder. Mix well to distribute the spices evenly.
- Rinse and dry mushrooms: Place the salted mushrooms in a colander and rinse off the salt under cold water. Pat them thoroughly dry with a paper towel to ensure the coating sticks properly.
- Dip mushrooms in non-dairy milk: Submerge each mushroom into the plant-based milk, ensuring they are evenly coated to help the flour mixture adhere.
- Coat in seasoned flour: Transfer each dipped mushroom into the flour and cornstarch mixture, coating it completely and evenly on all sides.
- Heat oil for frying: Pour vegetable oil into a deep pot or pan and heat over high heat until it reaches 370°F (188°C), suitable for deep frying.
- Deep fry until golden: Fry the coated mushrooms in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side or until the mushrooms develop a crispy golden brown crust.
- Drain and serve: Remove the fried mushrooms with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
Notes
- Ensure the mushrooms are patted dry thoroughly after rinsing to achieve a crispy coating.
- Do not overcrowd the pan when frying to maintain the oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
- Use a thermometer to check the oil temperature for optimal frying performance.
- This recipe is vegan and gluten-containing (due to all-purpose flour); substitute gluten-free flour if needed.
- Leftover fried mushrooms can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
