Description
This recipe for Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas delivers a crunchy, flavorful snack that’s quick and easy to make. Using simple pantry ingredients like canned chickpeas and a blend of spices, these chickpeas are air fried to perfection, resulting in a healthier alternative to traditional fried snacks. Perfect for a savory snack or salad topping, they’re best enjoyed fresh for maximum crispiness.
Ingredients
Chickpeas
- 1 can chickpeas (about 15 oz)
- 1/2 Tbsp aquafaba (reserved from the can of chickpeas)
Seasonings
- 1/4 tsp garlic salt
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Instructions
- Preheat Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and let it preheat fully before cooking.
- Prepare Chickpeas: Open the can of chickpeas and reserve at least 1/2 tablespoon of the liquid (aquafaba). Drain the chickpeas into a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cold water. Transfer them onto a kitchen towel, place another towel on top, and gently roll them to dry as much as possible. Discard any loose skins that come off naturally during drying.
- Initial Air Fry: Place the dried chickpeas in the air fryer basket in a single layer, avoiding stacking. Air fry at 400°F for 5 minutes, then stir to promote even cooking. Return to the air fryer for another 5 minutes and stir again. Cook an additional 5 to 7 minutes or until the chickpeas reach your desired crispiness.
- Prepare Seasoning Mix: In a small bowl, combine garlic salt, smoked paprika, and onion powder to ensure even distribution of flavors for the chickpeas.
- Season Chickpeas: Remove the crispy chickpeas from the air fryer and transfer them to a medium bowl. Add the reserved 1/2 tablespoon of aquafaba and stir to coat evenly. Sprinkle the seasoning mix over the chickpeas and stir again to thoroughly coat all pieces.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve the chickpeas immediately for the best crunchiness. If you have leftovers, re-crisp them by air frying at 400°F for 1-2 minutes before serving again.
Notes
- Ensure chickpeas are as dry as possible before air frying to achieve maximum crispiness.
- Do not remove the skins from each chickpea individually; some natural removal during drying is fine.
- Use aquafaba to help the seasoning stick without adding fat.
- Best served fresh, but leftover chickpeas can be re-crisped in the air fryer for a minute or two.
- You can adjust spice levels by adding cayenne or chili powder for a spicy twist.
