Description
A quick and delicious Peanut Butter Toast recipe featuring a creamy peanut butter custard filling with optional chocolate chips, cooked to golden perfection either in an air fryer or oven. Perfect for a satisfying breakfast or snack, this recipe combines crunchy toast with a smooth, sweet topping.
Ingredients
Filling
- 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
- 1 to 2 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Toast
- 2 slices white bread
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the peanut butter, egg, and maple syrup or honey. Mix well until smooth and creamy. Initially, the mixture will be liquidy but will thicken into a paste-like consistency within a few seconds. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips if using.
- Prepare the bread: Using your fingers or the back of a spoon, press into the center of each slice of bread to create an indent, forming a rim around the edges without puncturing the bread.
- Fill the bread: Spoon the peanut butter filling evenly into the indentations in the bread, leaving a 1/4 to 1/2 inch border exposed around the edges.
- Cook in air fryer (optional): Preheat the air fryer to 340°F (171°C). Place the filled bread slices into the air fryer basket once hot. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, checking after 4 minutes to prevent over-browning. Remove when the tops turn deep golden brown.
- Cook in oven (optional): Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Place the stuffed toasts on a baking sheet and bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the tops are deep golden brown. Keep an eye during the last few minutes to avoid burning.
- Finish and serve: The top should be crisp and slightly dry while the inside remains creamy and smooth. Avoid removing early to ensure the custard filling sets well. Optionally, sprinkle powdered sugar on top before serving hot.
Notes
- For a runnier filling, reduce baking time slightly, but the custard may remain slightly uncooked inside.
- Keep an eye on the toast during the last minute of cooking to prevent burning, especially in the air fryer.
- Using white bread gives the best texture and color contrast.
- Chocolate chips add a sweet chocolaty flavor but can be omitted for a more classic taste.
- Maple syrup and honey are interchangeable sweeteners; choose based on preference.
