Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 2 ½ pounds Granny Smith apples (about 5 apples, peeled and sliced)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp lemon juice
Crumble Topping
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 8 Tbsp unsalted butter (divided, cold and cut into pieces)
- 1/2 cup half and half
Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, toss together the peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples with both granulated and brown sugars, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lemon juice until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer this mixture evenly into a 9”x13” baking dish.
- Make the Crumble Topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and 4 tablespoons of cold, cubed butter. Use a fork or pastry cutter to mix until coarse crumbs form. Pour in the half and half and stir just until the mixture comes together to form a crumble texture.
- Assemble the Crumble: Evenly spread the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish to cover the apples completely.
- Add Butter Pieces: Distribute the remaining 4 tablespoons of cold, cubed butter on top of the crumble topping, spacing pieces evenly to create rich pockets of buttery goodness as it bakes.
- Bake the Crumble: Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping turns golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling and tender.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Top warm apple crumble with vanilla ice cream for a classic and comforting dessert experience.
Notes
- If Granny Smith apples are not available, you can use other tart apples like Honeycrisp or Braeburn for a similar texture and flavor.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking flour blend.
- Adding nuts like chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping adds a delightful crunch.
- To enhance the flavor, sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg or allspice into the apple mixture.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
