Ingredients
Phyllo Cups
- 1 box frozen phyllo cups (15 per box)
Caramelized Onions
- 4 medium yellow onions, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 cup chicken broth
- Salt, to taste
Toppings
- 4 oz brie cheese
- Fresh thyme for garnish
Instructions
- Caramelizing The Onions: Add butter and olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté, stirring every 5 minutes to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.
- Maintain Moisture: Continue cooking the onions over medium to medium-low heat for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring frequently. If the onions start to dry out, add small amounts of chicken broth to keep them moist and assist in caramelization.
- Deepen Flavor: Sauté the onions for an additional 15 to 30 minutes, watching as their color shifts from golden brown to a rich amber hue. The onions will also reduce significantly in volume. Season with salt to taste once caramelized.
- Prepare for Assembly: Transfer the caramelized onions to a bowl. If preparing ahead of time, store the onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove frozen phyllo cups from packaging and arrange them on a large baking sheet.
- Fill and Bake Tartlets: Spoon about one teaspoon of creamy brie cheese into each phyllo cup. Bake the filled tartlets in the preheated oven for 5 minutes, allowing the cheese to soften and start melting.
- Add Toppings and Garnish: Remove the tartlets from the oven and top each with approximately half a teaspoon of the caramelized onions. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves for added aroma and visual appeal.
- Serve: Serve the caramelized onion and brie tartlets warm or at room temperature as delightful bite-sized appetizers.
Notes
- Use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth to make the recipe vegetarian-friendly.
- Phyllo cups can be found in most grocery freezer sections for convenience.
- For a deeper flavor, cook the onions slowly and do not rush the caramelization process.
- These tartlets can be prepared a few hours in advance; reheat briefly before serving if desired.
- Fresh thyme can be substituted with rosemary or sage for a different herbaceous note.
