Bunny Churros are a fun and festive twist on the classic Spanish fried dough pastry, shaped into adorable bunny forms. These crispy, cinnamon-sugar coated treats are perfect for celebrations, served warm with caramel syrup or chocolate sauce for dipping. Made from a simple batter of butter, sugar, flour, and egg, and cooked by deep frying until golden, they offer a delightful crunchy exterior with a soft interior.
Ingredients
Churro Batter
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
For Frying
- 1 quart oil (for frying)
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
Serving
- Caramel syrup or chocolate sauce (for serving)
Instructions
- Make the Churro Batter: Add the water, 1 ½ tablespoons of granulated sugar, and butter to a saucepan over medium heat.
- Melt and Mix: Stir until the butter is fully melted and the ingredients are combined uniformly.
- Add Flour: Remove from heat and immediately stir in the flour with a spatula until the mixture comes together into a dough.
- Add Egg and Vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla bean paste to the dough and stir quickly to incorporate everything smoothly.
- Cool the Batter: Allow the dough to cool for a few minutes until it is safe to handle before transferring it into a large piping bag fitted with a star tip.
- Pipe the Churros: On small pieces of parchment paper, pipe the dough into shapes resembling bunny faces: a circle for the face and two smaller lines for ears.
- Heat Oil: In a large pot, heat the frying oil to 350°F (175°C) for optimal frying temperature.
- Fry the Churros: Carefully transfer 2 to 4 bunny churros into the hot oil. Fry for 1 minute, then gently flip using a spatula, cooking for another 1 to 1 ½ minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Drain: Remove churros from the oil with a slotted spatula and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: Combine 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon in a shallow dish.
- Coat Churros: Press each fried bunny churro into the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat both sides evenly.
- Cool Slightly: Transfer coated churros to a wire rack to cool just enough to handle safely.
- Serve: Serve the bunny churros warm, accompanied by caramel syrup or chocolate sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature (350°F) before frying to achieve crispy churros without absorbing excess oil.
- Pipe the churros onto parchment paper to easily transfer them into the hot oil without losing their shape.
- Use room temperature egg to help the batter combine smoothly and maintain the right texture.
- Serve churros immediately for the best crispy texture and warm deliciousness.
- Vanilla bean paste can be substituted with vanilla extract if unavailable.
