Description

This Big Mac Casserole with Tater Tots is a delicious, family-friendly twist on the classic fast-food favorite. Combining savory seasoned ground beef, homemade Big Mac sauce, crispy tater tots, and melted cheddar cheese, this casserole is baked to golden perfection and topped with fresh lettuce, pickles, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for an irresistible hearty meal.

Ingredients

Big Mac Sauce

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 teaspoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons dill pickle juice
  • 1 tablespoon dill pickle, minced
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Beef Mixture

  • 2 pounds ground beef (medium fat)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • ½ tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper

Other Ingredients

  • 3-4 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 32-ounce bag frozen tater tots
  • ½ to 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • ¼ to ½ cup dill pickle slices
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly spray a 9x13 inch casserole dish with cooking spray. Set this aside for later use.
  2. Prepare Big Mac Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, dill pickle juice, minced dill pickles, yellow mustard, white vinegar, sea salt, ground pepper, and smoked paprika. Whisk the mixture well until smooth and set aside.
  3. Cook Ground Beef: Place the ground beef in a large pan over medium heat. Cook until it is almost fully browned and no longer pink.
  4. Add Seasonings and Onion: Drain excess fat from the pan. Add chopped onion, garlic powder, sea salt, and ground pepper to the beef. Cook together for about 5 minutes until the onions are softened and beef is fully cooked.
  5. Assemble Casserole Base: Transfer the cooked beef mixture into the prepared casserole dish. Spread about half (or more) of the Big Mac sauce evenly over the beef. Then sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the sauce layer.
  6. Add Tater Tots and Bake: Arrange an even layer of frozen tater tots over the cheese. Place the casserole uncovered into the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Add Remaining Cheese and Bake: Remove the casserole from the oven, sprinkle the remaining cheese over the tater tots, and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts completely.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool slightly. Top with shredded iceberg lettuce, dill pickle slices, the remaining Big Mac sauce, and sprinkle sesame seeds over the top before serving.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of Big Mac sauce spread on the beef to your preference for more or less flavor.
  • Make sure to drain some excess fat from the beef to avoid a greasy casserole.
  • The tater tots ensure the casserole stays crispy; avoid covering them with foil during baking.
  • For extra cheesiness, use a blend of sharp and mild cheddar cheese.
  • This dish is best served fresh but can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven for best texture retention.
