Description
These vibrant Beet Buns are soft, flavorful bread rolls imbued with the natural sweetness and beautiful color of grated beetroot. Perfect for sandwiches or as a unique side, this recipe uses a simple yeast dough enhanced by olive oil and a hint of sugar, baked to golden perfection in under 40 minutes.
Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 4 cups (500 grams) all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp dry yeast
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup water
- 1 medium raw beet (thinly grated)
Instructions
- Mix the Dough: Put all the dough ingredients, including the grated beet, into a mixer bowl. Using a kneading hook, mix for about 10 minutes, periodically scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- First Proofing: Lightly grease the bowl and coat the dough with oil as well. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.
- Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 170°C (350°F) using the fan setting to prepare for baking.
- Shape the Buns: Divide the risen dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a small round bun shape.
- Arrange for Baking: Place the shaped buns on a baking pan lined with parchment paper, spacing them generously apart to allow room for expansion.
- Bake: Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 17 to 20 minutes, until golden and cooked through.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the buns to cool before slicing open and filling them with your favorite spread or paste.
Notes
- Ensure the water is lukewarm to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
- Grate the beet finely for even distribution and better texture in the dough.
- You can substitute all-purpose flour with bread flour for a chewier texture.
- For vegan fillings, consider hummus or avocado spreads to complement the earthy beet flavor.
- Store leftover buns in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
