Description
A fragrant and flavorful recipe for basmati rice infused with saffron, perfect as a delicate side dish that pairs beautifully with a variety of main courses. This method involves rinsing and boiling the rice before slow cooking it to tender perfection, followed by the addition of saffron-infused rice for a vibrant and aromatic presentation.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 4 cups water
- 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
- Salt, to taste
Saffron Infusion
- Pinch of saffron
- 1 teaspoon hot water
Instructions
- Rinse the Rice: Pour the basmati rice into a medium-sized pot and fill the pot halfway with water. Swirl and rinse the rice, then discard the water. Repeat this rinsing process 2-3 times until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
- Add Water, Oil, and Salt: After rinsing, add 4 cups of fresh water, 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or butter, and salt to taste to the pot with the rice.
- Boil the Rice: Place the pot on high heat and bring the water to a boil. Let it continue boiling until the water is mostly absorbed and no longer visible on top of the rice, approximately 5 minutes.
- Simmer the Rice: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice cook gently for 30-40 minutes, allowing it to absorb all remaining moisture and become tender.
- Prepare the Saffron: While the rice cooks, grind a pinch of saffron with a mortar and pestle, or crush it in a small bowl using the back of a spoon. Mix the ground saffron with 1 teaspoon of hot water until evenly combined.
- Mix Saffron with Rice: Take about ½ cup of the cooked plain rice and mix it well with the saffron water, allowing the rice to become beautifully yellow and fragrant.
- Serve: Spread the plain white rice on a serving platter and top with the saffron-infused yellow rice for a visually appealing and flavorful presentation.
Notes
- Rinsing the rice thoroughly helps remove excess starch, resulting in fluffy, non-sticky rice.
- You can substitute vegetable oil with butter for a richer taste.
- Use good quality saffron for the best flavor and color; a pinch is enough to infuse the rice.
- Cooking times may vary depending on your stove and pot type; check the rice texture accordingly.
- Serve alongside Indian or Middle Eastern dishes for a complete meal.
