Description

These Baked Jicama Fries offer a healthy, crispy alternative to traditional potato fries. Lightly seasoned with turmeric, garlic, and onion powders, these fries are boiled briefly for tenderness then baked to a perfect crispy finish. Served with creamy homemade or store-bought guacamole, they make for a delicious, nutritious snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Jicama Fries

  • 1 medium jicama (peeled and cut into thin slices about 1/4 inch thick, about 4-5 cups)
  • 1 Tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Serving

  • Homemade guacamole or store-bought guacamole

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) to prepare for baking the fries.
  2. Boil Jicama Slices: Bring a pot of water to a boil on the stovetop. Once boiling, add the jicama slices and boil for 8-10 minutes until slightly tender. Drain the water and pat the slices dry thoroughly to ensure crispiness after baking.
  3. Season Jicama: Place the dry jicama slices in a large bowl. Add avocado oil, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together to coat the slices evenly with the oil and spices.
  4. Arrange for Baking: Spread the seasoned jicama slices evenly onto a baking stone or baking sheet lined with a Silpat mat or parchment paper. Make sure the slices are not crowded to prevent steaming and to help them crisp up properly.
  5. Bake and Flip: Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the tray and flip the slices to ensure even baking. Then bake for an additional 20-30 minutes or until the fries turn slightly brown and reach your desired crisp texture.
  6. Serve: Remove the fries from the oven and serve immediately with homemade or store-bought guacamole for dipping.

Notes

  • Patting the jicama slices dry after boiling is essential to get crispy fries.
  • Ensure fries have space on the baking sheet to avoid steaming and soft fries.
  • Adjust baking time depending on your oven and desired crispiness.
  • Avocado oil is preferred for its high smoke point and healthy fats.
  • These fries are best eaten immediately for optimal texture but can be reheated in the oven.
