Ingredients
Filling Ingredients
- 3 large apples, peeled and diced
- ¼ cup water
- 3 Tbsp butter
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp cinnamon powder
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Glaze
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 ½ tsp milk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure the pastry does not stick during baking.
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a large saucepan, combine the diced apples with water, butter, salt, cinnamon powder, lemon juice, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour. Stir well to mix all ingredients evenly.
- Cook Filling: Cook the mixture over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter sauce thickens and the apples soften, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool completely to avoid sogginess in the pastry.
- Roll Puff Pastry: Place the thawed puff pastry sheet on a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle measurements around 13x9 inches to provide ample space for filling and braiding.
- Add Apple Filling: Spoon the cooled apple filling evenly down the center of the pastry rectangle, leaving equal space on both sides for making the braid.
- Cut Pastry Strips: Using a sharp knife or pizza wheel, cut 10 even strips lengthwise on each side of the filling, creating strips to be braided over the top.
- Braid Pastry: Starting from the top, alternate crossing the strips diagonally over the filling, overlapping each strip tightly to encase the filling and create a braided pattern.
- Fold Ends: Fold the pastry ends at the top and bottom of the braid over the filling to lock everything in place and prevent filling from leaking during baking.
- Bake Pastry: Transfer the braided pastry to the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven until the pastry is golden brown and crispy, about 18-20 minutes. Once baked, remove and let cool.
- Prepare Glaze: While the pastry is cooling, whisk together powdered sugar, lemon juice, and milk to create a smooth glaze that will add a sweet and tangy finish when drizzled over the braid.
Notes
- Ensure the apple filling is completely cooled before placing it on the pastry to avoid soggy dough.
- You can substitute brown sugar with maple syrup or honey for a different flavor profile.
- Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter for clean strips that braid easily.
- The glaze can be adjusted for consistency by adding more powdered sugar or milk as needed.
- If puff pastry is frozen, allow it to thaw overnight in the refrigerator for best results.
