Description

This Air Fryer Whole Chicken recipe delivers a perfectly crispy and juicy bird in just about an hour. Using simple seasonings like smoked paprika, garlic powder, and Italian herbs, the chicken is elevated with a flavorful golden skin and tender meat inside. Cooking in the air fryer ensures a quicker roasting time with less mess, making it an ideal dinner option for any weeknight or special occasion.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 whole chicken, 4 lbs (giblets removed)

Seasoning & Oil

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil (not extra virgin)
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (180°C) for 5 minutes. If your air fryer doesn't have a preheat option, simply run it for 5 minutes at the specified temperature to ensure even cooking.
  2. Prepare Seasoning: In a small bowl, mix together smoked paprika, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper to create the seasoning blend for the chicken.
  3. Season the Chicken: Pat the chicken dry thoroughly with paper towels ensuring the cavity is empty. Drizzle the chicken with olive oil and evenly rub the seasoning blend all over the chicken, including inside the cavity. Optionally, use kitchen twine to truss the legs together for more even cooking.
  4. First Cook Cycle: Place the chicken breast side down in the air fryer basket. Cook for 25 minutes, monitoring to prevent excessive browning. If the chicken starts to brown too quickly, tent a piece of aluminum foil over it to protect the skin.
  5. Flip and Continue Cooking: Using kitchen tongs, carefully flip the chicken so the breast side is up. Continue cooking for another 25 minutes. Continue monitoring and cover with foil if necessary. The chicken is done when the thickest part of the breast or thigh reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) using a meat thermometer.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove the chicken from the air fryer and let it rest for 10 minutes to allow juices to redistribute. Carve the chicken and serve warm.

Notes

  • Using a meat thermometer ensures your chicken is perfectly cooked and safe to eat.
  • Trussing the legs helps the chicken cook evenly and keeps it compact.
  • If your air fryer is smaller, you may need to reduce the size of the chicken or adjust cooking times accordingly.
  • Allowing the chicken to rest before carving retains moisture for juicy meat.
  • Use avocado oil as a substitute if you prefer a different flavor or higher smoke point than olive oil.
