Description

This Air Fryer Italian Sausage recipe offers a quick and flavorful way to prepare spicy or sweet Italian sausages paired with sautéed onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Using the air fryer ensures a juicy and perfectly cooked sausage with caramelized vegetables in under 20 minutes, making it ideal for an easy weeknight dinner or a casual lunch served in classic sub rolls.

Ingredients

Sausage

  • 4 Italian sausages (spicy or sweet)

Vegetables

  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 6 ounces mushrooms, sliced

Breads (Optional)

  • 4 sub rolls (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (204°C) for 3 minutes to ensure it's hot and ready for cooking the sausages evenly.
  2. Prepare air fryer basket: Place two slices of bread under the air fryer basket to catch the grease released from the sausages during cooking; the bread may get flattened, which is expected.
  3. Cook the sausages initially: Place the Italian sausages in the air fryer basket without crowding them. Cook for 6 minutes at 400°F.
  4. Slice the vegetables: While the sausages cook, slice the onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms evenly to help them cook uniformly later.
  5. Flip and add vegetables: After 6 minutes, reduce the air fryer temperature to 360°F (182°C). Use tongs to flip the sausages. Add the sliced onions, peppers, and mushrooms around and on top of the sausages in the basket.
  6. Continue cooking with vegetables: Cook for an additional 8 minutes at 360°F. After 4 minutes, open the air fryer and rearrange by placing the sausages on top of the vegetables to promote even cooking.
  7. Check doneness: Verify the internal temperature of the sausages reaches 160°F (71°C) for safe consumption. If not yet reached, cook for another 3 minutes and recheck.
  8. Serve: Once cooked thoroughly, remove the sausages and vegetables from the air fryer. Serve them in sub rolls as sausage sandwiches or plated on a serving dish.

Notes

  • Using bread under the basket helps absorb grease and simplifies cleaning.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and proper browning.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on air fryer model and sausage size.
  • You can customize the recipe by adding other vegetables like zucchini or tomatoes.
  • Check sausage internal temperature with a meat thermometer for food safety.
  • Sub rolls are optional but add a traditional touch for sandwiches.
